Flood Damage Analysis Project

The Risks Beyond the Floodplain.

In 2018, western Dane County experienced an unprecedented storm event that caused widespread flooding. Over 90% of the public disaster relief was paid to properties that are located outside the regulated floodplain. This mirrors trends from other Dane County flood events (such as the 2008 floods), and across the nation. Dane County Planning and Development and the Department of Emergency Management are cooperating on a project to better understand flood impacts under a changing climate. The project goals are to:

  • Get a better understanding of flood risk in Dane County
  • Identify high-risk areas (especially those outside traditional floodplains)
  • Educate public
  • Develop mitigation strategies
